Vermiculite is a compost additive, which is also ideal for covering newly sown seeds. When added to compost it holds nutrients and water near the roots, aerates the compost and helps to maintain a even temperature, which are all essential for seed germination. Use Vermiculite to cover newly covered sown seeds – because it is light it will not hinder seed germination plus it holds onto water and allows light through to encourage good germination. Vermiculite is a compost additive, which is also ideal for covering newly sown seeds. Vermiculite is a natural mineral that has been heated to high temperatures to produce lightweight, highly absorbent flakes. Use it in the garden to improve the aeration and moisture retention in compost leading to faster and healthier plant growth / better seed germination. Available in 10 litre and 20 litre bags. Use it to :-

  • When added to compost it holds nutrients and water near the roots, aerates the compost and helps to maintain a even temperature, which are all essential for seed germination. Seeds can be sown directly into vermiculite, but it is normally mixed 50 / 50 with compost.
  • Use Vermiculite to cover newly covered sown seeds – because it is light it will not hinder seed germination plus it holds onto water and allows light through to encourage good germination.
  • When seedlings are large enough to handle, prick them out into pots containing a 60 – 40 mix of compost and vermiculite.
