Full Description

These wall mountable, wooden Solitary Bee Houses are made locally in the UK from sustainable FSC timber and have been designed to attract solitary bees and encourage them to nest in your garden. These Solitary Bee Houses feature 6 x removable wooden nesting trays, which can be easily removed for annual cleaning / inspection – great for kids so they can see what is happening. It also means you can “harvest cocoons” and re-locate to other areas of the garden or give them to friends.

These Solitary Bee Houses are made from durable FSC timber and consists of 6 stacking nesting trays, which can be easily removed. The wood has been treated with a water based, environmentally friendly water repellent treatment, which is safe for bees, but means the house will last for years and you do not need to do anything else. The wood will naturally weather, but will not rot. There are also hole drilled in the top of the case , which can be used by bees or other beneficial insects i.e. ladybirds / lacewings. Designed to attract non-swarming bees like the Red Mason Bee, Leafcutter Bee and other solitary bees, these friendly bees are safe around children and pets (they rarely sting) and are naturally attracted to holes in wood – holes which are becoming harder to find in modern gardens. The Red Mason Bee (Osmia rufa) is active in the garden from March to July and is responsible for pollinating top fruit and soft fruit. The Blue Mason Bee (Osmia caerulescens) is active in the garden from late April to late July and is an effective pollinator of summer flowers, herbs and vegetables.

Solitary bees then lay their eggs inside the holes and seal them with mud or chewed up vegetation, so it is easy to tell if it is being used. The following year the adults AND their offspring will use the same nest again building up the numbers of solitary bees visiting your garden each year. Site the solitary beehive 1-1.5 metres high, in a sheltered site which catches the morning sun and near scented plants. A mud supply is useful, but not essential. Height 25cm x width x 17cm.

  • Site in a sunny position facing between south south east to catch some morning sun. Mounting height between ground level and 1.5m.
  • No chemical treatments needed as the habitat is made from durable timber.
  • Stacking trays may be inspected after bee activity has ceased i.e. in the Autumn/Winter

Excellent quality and very well made solitary bee house.

  2. David Poynter

A nice solid little bee house.
The trays were very tight though and needed tools and some effort to get them out but it’s all well-made.

  3. Richard Witton

Not quite as pictured, mine arrived with a hinged ‘flat’ roof rather than the pitch in the pictures, and no lacewing holes. Otherwise product is well made and seems perfect for some bees to setup home in.

Very Happy. Bought this solitary bee house for the leaf cutter bees in our garden. After learning more about their care we decided to migrate from bamboo canes to trays. Spent time looking for the perfect solitary bee house, reading comments, learning the pros and cons and decided that this was the one to buy. When it arrived we were delighted with the build quality and that it needed very little sanding (to protect delicate wings from snagging). The only change we made was to add small eye hook screws to the tray fronts to make their removal easier when harvesting and cleaning. Delighted with our purchase – we bought a second one which came very quickly and was packed well. (Tx) 👍🏻💕

I bought this solitary bee house for a friend after combing through numerous web sites. This one ticked all the boxes for me….solid and very well made. The recipient was very happy with his surprise gift, and has already decided where it will be sited. His only disappointment is that it will probably be at least 3 months before the bees start showing what they can do! The item was well packed and secure and despite the mail strikes it still arrived 2 days after dispatch.
    Thank you, Green Garden….highly recommended!
