Customer Question – Fuchsia Gall Mite and Winter?
Q. “Hello, I’m looking for some advice. I’ve got a problem with Fuchsia Gall Mites. I treated the fushsia in May with 10 sachets and then again in June with another 20 sachets. Whilst the damage to the fushsia has reduced, the gall mites appear to have come back. What’s your advice on getting rid of the gall mite at this time of year?” Thanks Rob
A. Thanks for the message and although Fuchsia Gall Mite is a difficult pest to control, the predatory mites should make it manageable. This late in the season I would just enjoy the autumnal colour and simply cut of the worst areas affected by Gall Mite rather than introducing more predators. Then let winter do its work i.e. let the leaves all fall off and then its important to clear all the leaf litter under the plant and cut them back (autumn or Spring). Clearing all the old wood / leaves will remove a lot of the over wintering mites. Hard winter weather will then hopefully kill more. Then in the spring when the new growth appears you can either pre-emptively position some sachets to target any mites that have managed to over-winter (this is the best approach and sachets are normally positioned in April / May) or you can wait and see what happens and position sachets as soon as you see the 1st sign of Gall Mite.
However – If you over-winter you fuchsias under-glass (or have a very sheltered garden) then I would move them indoors and then pop some sachets on them to clear any mites that might survive the winter in the greenhouse – CLICK HERE to order. These sachets are available throughout the winter for use under-glass or in very sheltered gardens.
Fuchsia Gall Mite is incredibly hard to control, but commercially we re-introduce sachets of Fuchsia Gal Mite sachets at 8 weekly intervals throughout the season, so if your problem is bad then regular smaller introductions of sachets is much better than waiting until the mites are bad and then introducing loads of sachets. We have a Fuchsia Gall Mite Sachet Programme, which deliveries fresh sachets of predators at 8 weekly intervals to make this as easy as possible.
I hope this helps Kind regards Jon & Green Gardener
