My Dad's lawn was a wreck - yellow and horrible with clumps of grass coming out. He treated it with your Nemasys chafer grub killer last year. Now this year it is a lovely dark green - like a bowling green. We all want to treat our lawns now! Mrs B from Norfolk.

Green Gardener - the natural way to keep your garden looking good
Chafer Grub Pest Alert - Watch out for the symptoms NOW. Chafer Grubs can devastate a lawn and until recently there were no controls available. They can now be treated with Nemasys® Chafer Grub Killer in early August.

The symptoms of a chafer grub infestation are :-

  • Grass growth slows and yellow patches appear.
  • Grass is easily pulled up, with little or no root growth.
  • Birds (& sometimes animals) attack the grass in an attempt to eat the grubs and cause even more damage. Larger birds such as magpies, crows & foxes/badgers indicate a chafer grub infestation.

Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer

Chafer Grub Pest Alert - The RHS have reported that "the chafer grubs are thriving in the warm weather and are devouring the roots of lawns." Chafer grub infestations can easily go unnoticed during years of heavy rainfall as the grass is able to produce fresh green growth despite the attack, BUT during periods of dry weather i.e. NOW, the lawn cannot regenerate, so chafer damage is much more obvious. Watch out for the symptoms NOW and if spotted, treat with Nemasys Chafer Grub Killer in early August.

As the newly hatched grubs are  most suseptible to the nematodes, there is only ONE opportunity a year to kill them i.e. between August / early October i.e. NOW when the grubs are newly hatched and near the surface. Order Nemasys® Chafer Grub Killer NOW - the ideal time to treat for chafer grubs in your lawn.

Treat Chafer Grubs in August / early October when the grubs are close to the surface and active - this is the only opportunity in the year to treat, so do not miss out. Spotting adults chafer beetles will help you to identify the pest responsible for the damage, BUT always inspect the lawn for the grubs to be sure.

Chafer Grubs are creamy coloured, approx 1.5 cm in length and have distinctive legs. They are found in grass roots. They are often mistaken for vine weevils - but vine weevil tend to be smaller and do not have legs. Like leatherjackets, chafer grubs attack the grass roots causing identical symptoms, but chafers are larger and creamy coloured, making them easy to identify. Sampling your lawn to identify the pest - Inspect discoloured areas of lawn by cutting a 6" X 6" section of turf on three sides and peeling back the sod. Examine the upper 2 inches of roots for white grubs. Shake the sample or probe through the soil with knife or screwdriver to dislodge the grubs. As the grubs will not be distributed evenly, examine other parts of the lawn to find out the extent of the infection.

Here are some pictures of a customer's lawn with a bad chafer grub infestation :-

The Garden Chafer Beetle emerges in May/June from the lawn and mate before laying eggs. These eggs hatch to produced chafer grubs. The eggs are often laid in the same place each year so the problem gets progressively worse. The Chafer Grubs feed on grass roots from July until late Autumn before burrowing deep into the ground to pupate. They are a source of food for large birds-crows and woodpeckers as well as foxes and badgers. These may do more harm to your lawn by ripping it up to get at the grubs. The Chafer Grubs then lay dormant during the winter deep in the ground before moving to the surface the following spring to emerge as beetles in May / June and starting the process again. As only the newly hatched grubs are susceptible to nematodes, there is only one opportunity a year to kill them i.e. between August - early October when the grubs are newly hatched and near the surface.

Nemasys® Chafer Grub Killer contains Heterorhabditis megidis nematodes which kill Chafer Grubs but is harmless to children, wildlife and pets and the lawn may be used immediately after application. Nemasys® Chafer Grub Killer is available in 2 pack sizes (for smaller lawns just make solution stronger - you can't overdose!) :

Large Nemasys® Chafer Grub Killer  - treats 100 sq.m / 125 sq. yds - £35.00
Economy Nemasys® Chafer Grub Killer  - treats 500 sq.m / 625 sq.yds - £100.00 saving £75.00

Nemasys® Chafer Grub Killer should be applied to the lawn in August / early October when the grubs are close to the surface and active. The soil must be  moist (we recommend pre - watering the lawn). Apply on a dull day or in the evening. Simply mix the nematodes with water and apply with a watering can, hoseend feeder or sprayer. Once you have applied the nematodes you MUST wash the nematodes into the soil again either manually or with a sprinkler.

  • Apply large packs with a watering can or hose-end feeder.
  • Economy packs MUST be applied with a sprayer.

After application, the chafer grubs will go through three stages before dying :

Stage1 - The nematodes invade the chafer grub and release a bacteria which starts to destroy it - there will be no visible change to the appearance of the chafer grub.
Stage 2 - The nematodes continue to invade the chafer grub, the grubs will shrink and start to turn black. As the grubs are now a less attractive food source, the birds and animals wil become less of a problem.

Stage 3 - The grubs will eventually turn black and die. The birds and animals will leave the lawn alone.

Nemasys® Chafer Grub killer is a living, perishable product. It will keep for up to 2 weeks in the FRIDGE The packs must be used all in one go and cannot be split.
