CATERPILLARS, CODLING, PLUM & WINTER MOTH, SCIARID FLY, THRIP, WIREWORM AND CRAWLING INSECTS - INCLUDING TREATING FLEAS, LICE, TICKS AND WORMS ON PETS.

NEW - Caterpillar control - Everyone likes to see butterflies and moths in the garden but any gardener who has tried to grow nasturtiums, brassicas (cabbages, broccoli etc) will know the damage that caterpillars do. This NEW effective nematode control for caterpillars is harmless to children, pets and wildlife and is safe to use on edible crops.

Caterpillars are the larval stage of butterflies and moths and they can soon decimate both ornamental and edible crops. Young caterpillars "graze" on to the underside of leaves as they are unable to chew but as they grow they will cause more and more damage including damage to flowers, the growing tips and fruit. This NEW nematode control is going to prove invaluable to the green gardener as it controls a wide range of caterpillars including Gooseberry Sawfly.

Caterpillar free Nasturtiums.

Small caterpillars attacking leaves.

 Larger caterpillars attacking the flowers.

Caterpillar Control - Each pack of caterpillar control contains 3 separate sachets of 20 million Steinernema carpocapse nematodes and will treat up to 40 sqm of plants. The first sachet of nematodes is mixed with water and applied with a sprayer directly to the affected plants making sure the nematodes are sprayed onto the caterpillars. Once the nematodes have entered the caterpillars, they will release a bacteria which the nematodes feed off but it kills the caterpillar. The whole process is repeated at 5-7 day intervals using a fresh sachet of nematodes each time to kill any caterpillars that hatch after the first treatment i.e. each pack gives you 3 treatments at 5-7 day intervals. Store the sachets in a fridge (the expiry date will be at least 1 month) until you are ready to use them.

  • Apply when caterpillars are FIRST seen on plants.

  • Apply each of the 3 applications to the same area at 5 to 7 day intervals to ensure all hatchings are killed.

  • Apply to all the leaf surfaces (including the underside) where caterpillars are present, making sure the nematodes come into contact with the caterpillars. N.B. Caterpillars not directly sprayed will not be controlled.

How to use - Follow the simple 4 step application :-

  1. Wet the area before applying the nematodes.

  2. Put the pack contents into a pump sprayer, add water and mix well.

  3. Apply immediately - each pack treats up to 40 sqm. Avoid applications in bright sunlight, apply during the evening or dull conditions. Use entire packet at one time and do not store made up solution

  4. Repeat with each pack at 5 to 7 day intervals so that a total of 3 applications are applied

Codling and Plum Moth Traps - The moth lays eggs in developing fruit flowers and these produce grubs which eat the centre of the developing fruit, so instead of a nice crunchy apple etc there is an unpleasant brown 'mess' (see below) . Stop this happening by using moth traps.

Control codling & plum moth by using codling moth or plum moth traps -

  • Easy to use- simply hang 1 trap per 5 trees.

  • Effective- lasts whole season.

  • Pesticide free, safe for beneficial insects.

  • Refills available. Traps to be reused.

Glue Bands - Protect your apple and other fruit trees from winter moth with these bands coated in non-toxic, non-drying glue which forms an effective barrier against crawling insects. Most insects will not try to cross the band and those that do will be caught. The green waterproof paper is not attractive to beneficial insects.

Glue Bands - Place the band around the tree trunk, below the lowest branch and ideally 60-90cm (2-3 feet) above the ground.

  • Protects apples and other fruit trees against winter moth.

  • Also protects against ants, vine weevil and earwigs.

Left : Glue bands in position on our young fruit tree.

SCIARID FLY: Also known as compost fly, sciarid is a common pest of greenhouse plants in the spring. Young bedding plants, especially bizzie-lizzies, can be affected with large numbers of small flies covering young plants, whilst larvae eat the roots. Easily controlled using Hypoaspis, which eat sciarid larvae. Introduce when the pest is present and average temps are above 11°C/52°F:-

  • Safe for plants - will not scorch tender seedlings or young plants.

  • Safe for you - use on plants in your living room or conservatory.

  • Sprinkle over compost. Treats 100-150 sq ft of pots or seed trays.

THRIP: Thrip attacks plants including African violet and chrysanthemum - damaging growing points and causing mottling, distortion and blistering of leaves. On cucumbers fruit is small and twisted. Use Ambleysius.

  • Safe to use on open flowers where sprays would scorch.

  • Safe for you- use on plants in your living room or conservatory.

  • Easy to use- just sprinkle onto leaves.

WIREWORM - Wireworms are a soil based pest that attack potatoes, carrots and other root crops particularly in the late summer and autumn. Controlling this pest is difficult as it has a life cycle that can last over 2 years*. We do know that the nematode - Heterorhabditis megadis will attack wireworms. It is applied through a watering can or hose end feeder in May - August or as soon as the soil temp is 12c and wireworms are present, with plenty of water applied afterwards so the nematodes can swim in the soil water to find the wireworms. As with all nematodes, only order when you are ready to apply as they do not keep.

* Due to the extended lifecycle, you may need to apply for a number of years to clear the pest.

Control ants, woodlice and earwigs with Diatomaceous Earth (DE): Diatomaceous Earth is 100% natural and is mined from the ground. The diatomaceous earth is supplied as a fine powder and simply "squirt" the powder where-ever the insects live or crawl. Diatomaceous Earth controls insects by physical means not chemical. Use it to control :-

  • Ants, earwigs, woodlice, and other crawling insects in the garden - ideal for controlling ants in patios and driveways.

  • Fleas, ticks and lice on cats and dogs - simply rub into the coat.

  • Fleas in pet bedding and carpets.

  • Worms in cats and dogs - simply add the relevant dose (dosage information supplied with the DE) to your pets food.

  • Flies in a wormery - add a dusting of DE to the surface of the wormery contents.

  • Poultry mite on poultry and in poultry houses.

DE comprises of the fossilised remains of diatoms ( a type of algae ). The diatoms have a hard shell made of non-crystalline silica, which does not decompose in the lakes, or sea where diatoms live. Thus over long periods of time large volumes of diatoms are exposed on the surface from dried out lakes. Thousands of tons of this natural product are available worldwide in many countries.

Diatomaceous Earth is supplied in 100g puffer bottles or in a 1kg tub with a free re-fillable puffer bottle.

How does it work? Diatomaceous Earth controls insects by physical means not chemical. The DE is applied to where the insects live and / or move and will be picked up by the insect’s exoskeleton by static electricity. The DE causes abrasion cuts in the insect’s cuticle and once exposed the insect can no longer retain its moisture and so dies. Insects will die from contact with DE within a few days.

Left : Using DE to control ants in paving slabs. Right : Using DE to de-flea my dog.
