LIVE BIRD FOODS & SPECIAL SEED MIXES.

"Since swapping to your bird seed and live bird foods, the number of birds visiting my table is amazing - thankyou from my feathered friends"

Mr P. Yarmouth

The RSPB and The British Trust for Ornithology recommend feeding wild birds ALL year round.

Live Bird Food and Speciality Seed Mixes - Everyone knows about feeding birds through the winter BUT birds energy requirements are fairly even throughout the year and it is now recommended that we feed birds throughout the year :-

  • Feed in the winter as birds need energy to keep warm.

  • Feed in the spring and summer as birds need energy for the breeding season and for the annual moult which follows.

  • Feed in the autumn as birds need energy to get ready for winter plus many birds arrive hungry after migrating.

Our range of feeds are ideal for all year round feeding and include :-

  • Live bird food - mealworms and mini mealworms are ideal for feeding all year round.

  • Speciality Seed Mixes - Two different seed mixes including the best selling Insect A seed & Fruity wild bird seed mix.

Live Bird Food - Mealworms & Mini Mealworms - are high in fat and protein and are ideal for feeding to birds all year round. They are odourless and are easy to feed and can be kept anywhere cool i.e. shed, garage or bottom of the fridge.

Why feed live food - Protein is necessary in the diet of all wild birds for growth and development, and one of the best protein sources is live food. The decrease in suitable bird habitats through intensively farmed land and the consequent loss of hedgerows, copses and woodland has seen a continuing decline in live food such as worms, larvae and beetles. Offering this natural food at garden bird tables is therefore becoming very important for a whole range of birds from robins and blackbirds, to the less common woodpeckers, wrens and family of tits.

Left : They are the best way to hand tame a robin.

"I shall have to start rationing the mealworms! I've got goldfinches, chaffinches, green finches, blue tits (nesting) great tits (nesting) robins, blackbirds, starlings, crows, pigeons, collar doves and wrens visiting and my neighbours are delighted at the range they're getting too now!" Thank you very much Ruth Selby

All about live food - Live foods are clean and odourless and keep well at room temperature so either store them in your garage or utility room for up to 3 weeks. Should you wish to store them for longer periods you can transfer them to the warmest part of the fridge (away from the icebox) where they will last even longer. Packaged in bran within breathable tubs with tight fitting lids, this ensures they stay healthy and fresh and ready to feed your feathered friends. Simply tip one third of the contents of the tub into a feeder or shallow dish on your bird table and birds will feed all year round.

When should I put live food out? -

  • In summer the ground can be hard and worms stay deep underground.

  • In winter the ground freezes and as well as finding it difficult to dig for worms and other live food, birds need extra food as they are using up lots of energy just keeping themselves warm.

  • In the breeding season when the adults will take them back to their nests to help feed their chicks.

Once the birds learn that live food is regularly available all year round you should see a diverse range of birds coming to your table.

Live Foods available from Green Gardener.

Mealworms - Mealworms are the best selling live bird food. Mealworms are the larvae of the flour beetle, a harmless beetle which consumes flour, meal, grain and other related crops and is found naturally in the wild in the UK. Their smooth, shiny wormlike bodies are made up of over 48% crude protein and 40% fat and have a high moisture content making them an excellent, proven food for insect eating garden birds. The mealworm diet is vegetarian which means they are safe to feed to birds and chicks without passing on diseases which may be present in meat fed larvae such as maggots.

Mini Mealworms - Mini Mealworms are young mealworms (see above) and are graded so they measure between 13-18mm. As with the other mealworms, their diet is vegetarian which means they are safe to feeds to birds and their young. Being small and moist, the mini mealworms are ideal for feeding to fledglings and smaller birds i.e. sparrows etc and being particularly moist, they are ideal for fledglings as they are an important source of water as they are unable to obtain water from drinking.

Dried Mealworms - For the squeamish or for long term storage.

Dried Mealworms - A dried version of our best selling mealworms. Contains all of the protein and goodness of the live mealworms but in a dried form which makes them ideal for the squeamish. Also as they are dried, they will keep indefinitely and do not need to be refrigerated.

N/B. As mealworms are dried and do not contain moisture, water must be provided at the same time and are not suitable for fledglings.

NEW - Mealworm Feeders - Finding a suitable container to offer live food in can prove difficult. Too deep and the birds can't reach down to the food, not steep enough & the mealworms can escape. Both of these feeders keep the mealworms in place so the birds can help themselves, but the special mesh floor sieves the bran (used to transport them in) and stops the food becoming water logged.

A wide range of birds, such as wrens, robins, woodpeckers, goldcrests, tits and bramblings etc will soon start to use your feeder once they learn that live food is regularly available.

NEW - Live feeders - both these feeders feature a mealworm dispenser and can be either hung from a tree or post OR attached to a fence, wall or post. Simply tip your chosen live food into the feeder and birds will feed all year round. These new feeders are available from the end of January onwards.

Left - Hanging live feeder with twin feeding stations - use one side for mealworms and fill the other with water or seed.

Right - Wall mounted live feeder.

Speciality Wild Birds Seed Mixes - These seed mixes have been specially blended from top quality seed and also include extras which will appeal to a wide range of birds. They are made from top quality natural ingredients :-

N/B. We only stock high quality seed mixes as they contain high grade food and produce very little waste. Many cheaper feeds contain cheaper ingredients including split peas, beans, dried rice and lentils to bulk them out - they may be cheap to buy but you will need to put out much more as the birds will discard these unsuitable foods!!! Any food containing green or pink lumps should also be avoided as it is most probably DOG BISCUIT and this should only be fed when soaked.

Fruity Wild Bird Seed Mix - A blend of raisins, bananas and sultanas mixed with top quality wild bird seed. The added fruit is ideal for fruit loving birds such as blackbirds and thrushes which prefer softer foods. Plus much more black sunflower seed for even better flavor. Suitable for feeding from a table or feeder.

Fruity Mix - 15 kg of fruity wild bird seed mix - £34.99 (only £2.33 per kg)

Insect-a-Seed wild bird seed - A top quality mix of fine seeds with added honey, soft fruit, wild berries and dries insects including mealworms, Chinese water flies and shrimps! Specifically designed to attract insect eating birds like wrens, thrushes, blackbirds and robins. Best fed on the ground or the bird table.
