APHID CONTROL OUTDOORS
- Lacewings
and Ladybirds. |
|
Ladybirds and Lacewings
- Aphids (both greenfly and blackfly) are a big
problem in gardens. Natural predators such
as ladybirds and lacewings love to eat aphids, but they can be
scarce. Help nature by introducing extra ladybirds
(available as adults and larvae) and / or lacewing
larvae. Release lacewing
larvae and / or ladybirds into your
garden between mid May and August. Over
a period of time increasing the number of beneficial insects in the
garden will lead to a permanent increase in the number of beneficial
insects in your garden and a decrease in the number of aphids. Then,
position a ladybird house
or lacewing chamber
to encourage the beneficial insects to feed, breed & over winter
in YOUR
garden. Which should I use?
-
For light infestations on
a spread of garden plants simply place adult
ladybirds around the garden to
search out the pests.
-
For moderate
infestations concentrated on a few
plants use ladybird
larvae placed directly onto the
infected plants.
-
For a bit
of both use the ladybird
family and save
money too!
-
For heavier
infestations use
lacewing larvae or a gardeners friends pack
( a pack of both lacewing larvae and adult ladybirds and save
money too!) placed directly onto the infected plants. |
|

Lacewing Larvae -
Lacewing larvae are a natural predator of aphids, able to eat over
300 aphids each. Lacewing larvae occur naturally in the garden but
often aphids numbers explode (especially in warm weather) and the
lacewings struggle to eat them all. By
releasing extra lacewing larvae, aphids can be controlled
naturally. They are sprinkled over the affected plants and soon
settle down to feed on aphids and other soft bodied insects
such as whitefly and thrip. Lacewing larvae can be introduced
as soon as the temperatures are above 10°c
/ 50°f.
Introduce
lacewing larvae between May and August. Available from mid May onwards. SOLD

"The rosebuds
were horrendous- they were covered in aphids and also lupin stems.
Lacewings completely cleared them and I haven't seen any aphids
since." S.J. from London SW16
"I bought lacewing larvae through you for a
couple of years now and theyve had a great affect on the
aphids, so last autumn we put up a lacewing chamber too. Now I must
admit that I was a little skeptical that it would actually work, but
left it out as instructed and then stored it away for the winter. I
was a little late putting it back out this year (nearly the end of
April), I only remembered when loads of aphids appeared on my roses.
So I was more than a little pleasantly surprised to see the roses
covered in little lacewing larvae just a couple of days later.
Suffice to say the roses are now aphid free and the apple tree has
stayed aphid free too. Many thanks for bringing to my attention a
great natural product that really works." Regards

Lacewing Chambers and
Ladybird Houses. |
|
Green Gardener has a
range of houses and chambers which simulate the natural habitat
sought by beneficial insects for hibernation. By
providing a shelter you can increase the number of
beneficial insects surviving the winter in YOUR
garden giving better pest control by encouraging them to feed,
breed and over winter in YOUR garden. |
|
Lacewing Chamber
- Unfortunately many Lacewings do not survive the Winter, so the
aphids get away to a flying start in the Spring. By placing a
Lacewing chamber in your garden, the survival rate of the lacewings
can be dramatically improved and there will be more of them to
control the aphids in the Spring.
Lacewing Chambers should be positioned between
September and October. The wooden chamber
comes ready to use and consists of a sturdy wooden box which is
guaranteed to last for years and a straw insert which is treated with
a strong attractant to attract the lacewings to their new home. (this
straw insert can be recharged each year in September.) |
