Ermine Moth Caterpillars – If your fruit trees, shrubs and hedges are covered in “silk webbing” and there are caterpillars in great numbers these are likely to be the caterpillars of the Ermine Moth. The “webbing” is easily spotted and can cover trees, but its the caterpillars hiding in the webbing that do the damage often leading to the defoliation of the plants / trees. Ermine moths emerge as adults in July or August,  mate and lay eggs. The larvae hatch in August and will over-winter as caterpillars before starting to feed again in spring. The caterpillars pupate within the webbing and it is this silk webbing, which is the most obvious symptom. To control Ermine Moth Caterpillars, apply the Ermine Caterpillar Nematodes TWICE at 3-5 day intervals when the the caterpillars are spotted and re-apply as necessary to keep caterpillars at bay AND then hang an Ermine Moth Trap up between April and August to catch the moths.

Use this unique mix of different nematodes to control Ermine Moth caterpillar on your fruit trees Ermine Caterpillar Nematodes are safe to use on food crops, are suitable for use on organic crops and will not harm pets, children, wildlife or bees. Ermine Caterpillar Nematodes need a minimum temp of 12°c and are a perishable product, so order when you are ready to apply – normally between March and October. Supplied in sachets as a powder, which is mixed with water and applied with a sprayer treating up to 25sqm– to treat a smaller area just make the solution stronger as it is impossible to overdose.

The nematodes need to come into contact with the caterpillars , so make sure to target the caterpillars rather than spraying aimlessly over the webbing. They are a perishable, living product, so it is sent out fresh by Royal Mail 1st class post. Being a perishable, living product, it must be used before the expiry date (which is marked on the inside of the pack and will be at least 2 weeks) and it must be stored in the fridge until it is needed. Once opened, the contents do not keep, so it must be used in one day – do NOT store the made up solution or powder. 1 or 2 packs will go through your letterbox and should be popped in the fridge as soon as possible – they are fine on the doormat while you are at work. Apply Ermine Caterpillar Nematodes with a sprayer or EasyNem Applicator.

N.B. Ermine Moth Caterpillar Nematodes need a temperature of 12°C/40°F and is a perishable product (it will keep for approx 2 weeks in the fridge), so please order when you are ready to apply. Box Tree Caterpillars – These caterpillars feeds on box plants causing severe defoliation and produce large amounts of webbing. As the caterpillars feed, areas of dieback may appear, which will be especially apparent on trimmed plants. Box Tree Caterpillars are greenish-yellow with black heads and once fully grown the caterpillars reach up to 4cm in length and will have a thick black and thin white stripes along its body. In the spring, the moths appear and there can be up to 3 generations of caterpillars a year. Box Tree Caterpillars over-winter as caterpillars rather than as moths, so it is essential to kill as many of the caterpillars as possible before the temperatures drop in the autumn. The caterpillars over-winter, hidden between leaves that have been spun together with silk and will then emerge next spring as moths to reproduce and produce the next generation of caterpillars. Use Volcanic Rock Dust to control Box Tree Caterpillars. Rock dust is used commonly to improve soil fertility, but now it has been discovered that dusting you box plants with rock dust when caterpillars are discovered and then twice a year in April and July not only controls the caterpillars, but helps the plants to recover after they have been attacked.

Other Uses for Volcanic Rock Dust – Rock Dust is commonly used to improve soil fertility – use it to treat veg gardens, lawns, fruit trees, tubs and baskets. Adding Rock Dust results in high yields, tastier fruit and vegetables and increased resistance to pests and drought. It is also beneficial to add it to compost heaps and wormeries where it will encourage worms. Can be applied all year round as a top dressing except when the ground is frozen or in very windy conditions. Mined from Scottish quarries, this remarkable volcanic rock is natural and organic.

• Apply as a top dressing at a rate of 0.5kg per sqm.
• Add 1kg per 50 litres when mixing through compost and soil.
• Apply to Tubs & Baskets – Add a tablespoonful onto the surface diameter of a 15cm pot / basket and water in. Two applications per year.
• Add a dusting to your compost heap as you add material to promote composting and reduce odours.
• Add a handful to your wormery every month to give your worms a treat.

• Standard Packs of nematodes can be applied with a watering can fitted with a coarse rose (we recommend and sell the Fine as Rain no.14 rose) or with a hose-end feeder / EasyNem Applicator.  N.B. Standard packs of Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer MUST be applied with a watering can and cannot be applied with a hose-end feeder / nematode applicator.
• Large Packs of nematodes can be applied with a watering can fitted with a coarse rose (we recommend and sell  the Haws no.14 rose), but it is much easier to apply nematodes to larger areas with with a EasyNem Applicator,  Hose-end Feeder / Nematode Applicator. N.B. The EasyNem Applicator and Hose-end Feeder are suitable for treating areas up to 200 sqm, but for larger jobs, we recommend using the Nematode Applicator i.e. for application to large lawns.
• For applying nematodes to larger areas i.e. over 200 sqm or for regular nematode application, use a Nematode Applicator.
  
• For larger Spraying Jobs i.e. for applying Nemasys Fruit and Vegetable Protection to hedges to control Box Tree Caterpillar, the 5 litre Rechargeable Sprayer is ideal.

Fine as Rain no.14 Rose – Watering cans need to be fitted with a coarse rose,which will allow the nematodes to flow easily. We recommend using the Haws Rose no.14, as not all roses are suitable – its large holes will not clog when applying nematodes.

EasyNem Applicator – Designed specifically for applying nematodes, this EasyNem Applicator makes applying nematodes much easier.  It attaches via standard hose-pipe connector – simply add the nematodes to the feeder bowl and water for 5-7 minutes – during this time the nematodes will be dispersed at the correct rate. The Applicator can also be used for applying liquid feed to plants and lawns – perfect for applying Root Success to help lawns recover from a pest attack. 

Hose-end feeder – Used for applying nematodes to larger areas i.e. up to 200 sqm. This feeder can also be used for applying liquid feed to plants and lawns. Attaches via standard hose-pipe connector and features both a rose head and jet spray as well as an on / off switch for water flow. We supply the Miracle Gro Hose-end Feeder as not all of them are suitable for applying nematodes.
