New LIVE Mealworms - Our LIVE mealworms will be a welcome addition to your bird table / feeder, as birds love them PLUS they are delivered in a 100% compostable tub. A birds energy requirements are fairly even throughout the year, so it is recommended by the RSPB that we feed birds ALL YEAR ROUND :-
- In the Autumn - as birds need energy to prepare for winter plus many birds arrive hungry after migrating.
- In the Winter - With the ground frozen it is important to feed our wild birds as it is difficult for them to dig for worms and other live food PLUS they need extra food to provide energy, so they can keep warm.
- In the Spring and Summer - as birds need energy for breeding and for the annual moult which follows. In the breeding season, so the adults can take them back to their nests to help feed their chicks.
New LIVE Mealworms - Mealworms are the larvae of the flour beetle (a harmless beetle which consumes flour, meal and grain, which is found naturally in the wild in the UK) - they are high in fat and protein and are ideal for feeding to birds all year round. They are odourless, easy to feed and can be stored for up to 3 weeks anywhere cool i.e. shed, garage or bottom of the fridge. Once the birds learn that live food is regularly available you should see many different ones coming to your table.
Why feed live food - Protein is necessary in the diet of all wild birds for growth and development and one of the best protein sources is live food. Made up of over 48% crude protein and 40% fat, they also have a high moisture content making them an excellent, proven food for insect- eating garden birds. The mealworm diet is vegetarian, which means they are safe to feed to birds and chicks without passing on diseases ,which may be present in meat fed larvae such as maggots. The loss of hedgerows, copses and woodland through intensive farming has seen a continuing decline in live food such as worms, larvae and beetles. Offering live food like mealworms is very important for a whole range of birds from robins and blackbirds, to the less common woodpeckers, wrens and the family of tits.
How are they sent - Mealworms are packed within breathable tubs with tight fitting lids that are made from plant based material and are 100% COMPOSTABLE and are sent by 1st class post.
