Customer Question – How to use Lacewing Chamber
Q. “Any idea of the best place to store the lacewing house? None of our fence posts have a flat top, would it need to be secured anyways? It is currently on top of our external gas meter, but I wasn’t sure if the wood would absorb water if it pools? Thanks!” Zak
A. At the end of November store the Lacewing Chamber in a shed or garage to keep it dry and protect it from the worst of the weather. Ideally the chamber needs to create a silhouette so that’s why on top of a post is best. Can you attach a piece of wood to the top of the post and then fix the chamber to it? It does need to be on top of a wooden post or fence 5-6ft off the ground.
Position a Lacewing Chamber in your garden in the autumn (late August – late October) to make sure more Lacewings survive the winter. Lacewing larvae are important in the garden, because their larvae eat greenfly and blackfly plus other insect pests. Lacewings occur naturally in your garden and unusually they overwinter as adults, but 90% of lacewings do not survive the winter because of a shortage of suitable shelter. By placing a Lacewing Chamber in your garden, many more of these beneficial insects will survive the winter to control pests in the spring. The wooden chamber comes ready to use and consists of a sturdy wooden box, which will last for years, a straw insert AND a strong pheromone attractant to entice the lacewings into their new home for the winter – simply replace the straw insert and pheromone lure each year to keep attracting lacewings. Position the chamber, with the louvred front facing away from the prevailing wind, on top of a wooden post or fence 5-6ft off the ground. Measures 23cm high x 14.5 cm wide x 18cm deep. We normally recommend taking the chamber down once it gets really cold and popping it somewhere protected from the worst of the weather before popping it back out in the spring :-
- Put the chamber place from mid August to mid October to attract the most lacewings. We include a pheromone lure to attract the lacewings in.
- At the end of November store the chamber in a shed or garage to keep it dry and protect it from the worst of the weather.
- In early March put it back in the garden, so that the lacewings can emerge and start working again in the garden.
I hope this helps
