Customer Question – Positioning a Lacewing Chamber?
Q. “Hello, I hope you are well! I recently ordered some lacewing larvae from you, and they are munching away on my greenfly. I also ordered a lacewing overwintering chamber, with the hope that they may lay eggs, and I may gain more larvae. However, I am slightly concerned about putting the chamber outside, as I live in the far north, in Shetland, and it is very cold here in the winter. Can I set up the chamber in my unheated greenhouse? It would seem to me that would be best to ensure they overwinter and stay alive. Hopefully in the Spring they may emerge into the greenhouse and deal with the aphids again. I would appreciate any advice on this, thank you!” Liz Peterson
A. Thanks for the message and we normally recommend taking the chamber down once it gets really cold and popping it somewhere protected from the worst of the weather before popping it back out in the spring. Try this :-
- Put the chamber place from mid August to mid October to attract the most lacewings. We include a pheromone lure to attract the lacewings in.
- At the end of November store the chamber in a shed or garage to keep dry and protect it from the worst of the weather.
- In early March put back in the garden.
I hope this helps
