The Solitary Bee Nest provides an ideal nesting site for solitary bees, all of which are extremely effective pollinators. Siting Solitray Bee Nests in your garden will encourage solitary bees like the Red Mason Bee, Leaf-cutter Bee and other solitary bees to visit, nest and return to your garden each year. Solitary bees are safe around children and pets as they rarely sting. The Solitary Bee Nest holds 30 nesting tubes, which the bees lay their eggs in.
Site the Solitary Bee Nest either on the ground in amongst plants or it can easily be attached to a fence, post or tree - position 1-1.5 metres high, in a sheltered site which catches the morning sun and near scented plants. The solitary bees will then lay their eggs inside the tubes and seal them with mud or chewed up vegetation, so it is easy to tell if it is being used. The following year the adults AND their offspring will use the same nest again building up the numbers of solitary bees visiting your garden each year. These bees lay a series of eggs in tubes, each being sealed in separately. The eggs hatch the following spring and after a period feeding the process begins again. Because the eggs are laid in easily removable cardboard tubes, it is easy to remove the tubes and relocate them to other parts of the gardens - simply insert into newly installed Solitary Bee Nests. Each Solitary Bee Nest comes complete with 30 tubes and replacement tubes are available separately. 16.5cm x 8.5cm x 10cm high.
