What do they look like?

Slugs come in all shapes, sizes & colours, but they do have several things in common. Covered in a watery mucous and requiring water for reproduction, so they all like damp conditions. They tend to be most numerous and do the most damage in warm, damp springs and autumns. Many are nocturnal and hide during the day under stones or leaf litter. They leave a characteristic ‘slime trail’ on the soil/leaf surface helping to identify the pest.Slugs feed on the foliage, flowers, stems & roots. They leave ragged holes in mature leaves or they can destroy young plants & ruin the appearance of larger plants such as hostas. Some slugs feed on the roots of plants and do not appear on the surface.

What is the slugs life cycle?

Slugs can breed throughout the year except in periods of drought or frost. Peak egg laying is in the autumn and spring. The eggs, translucent and round, are laid in clusters in damp soil and rotting vegetation, where they are protected from frost and drought. Some species lay eggs well below the soil surface. In warm weather they may hatch in a few weeks, but those laid in autumn/winter tend to hatch in the spring.

Nematodes are microscopic worms that are found naturally in the soil and are just about invisible to the naked eye. They are already there in small numbers, but by applying extra you can boost their numbers and make them more effective at controlling pests. What are the advantages of using Slug Nematodes?

The nematodes contained in EasyNem Slug Nematodes and Nemaslug Slug Killer are approved for use in organic gardens and are approved by the Soil Association. This nematode powder is perishable and needs to be kept in a fridge, so you won’t find it on a garden centre shelf – it needs to be sent fresh by mail order. The pack has an expiry date (usually about 2 weeks) and must be kept in a fridge until applied. This is a perishable product and should be used in 1 application before the expiry date. Use all the powder in one go and once the powder has been mixed the solution should be used immediately. The powder is in sealed packs and is totally harmless to your yoghurts and cheese!

How are slug nematodes applied?

The nematodes are supplied as a harmless powder, which is mixed with water and applied by watering can through a coarse rose (specific NemaCan available or fit a Coarse Rose to an existing can) or for larger areas use a EasyNem Hose-end Applicator. As the slugs crawl across the soil, or even under it to eat your favourite plant, the nematodes enter the slug. Nematodes should only be applied to moist soil (not hard surfaces or lawns). Bark or gravel mulches will need to be removed before application and then replaced.

Will chemicals affect the slug nematodes?

Normal spraying of the aerial parts of the plant to control greenfly etc. will have no effect on the nematodes, which live in the soil. Fertilisers and weedkillers will not affect the nematodes either.

Are these nematodes dangerous?

Only if you are a slug! They only attack slugs and are harmless to you, your children, pets and other wildlife. Slugs normally crawl underground and will expire gracefully there. Slugs are an important source of food for a number of birds – even if a bird eats a slug controlled by Nemaslug® the bird will not be affected!

What about snails?

Every gardener knows the havoc an infestation of slugs can have in the garden. Some people may think slugs are horrible slimy things which is understandable. But like so many creatures, when you look a bit closer, there are a lot of fascinating facts you should know about them. Did you know that the average slug will consume an amazing 28oz of plant material in a growing season?

Traditional Methods

Salt, vinegar and coffee grinds have all been methods used to kill slugs. Many people think these methods – along with slug pellets which can alter the natural balance of the garden – are cruel and prefer to use more natural and less harmful methods.

Using Nematodes

Using nematodes to control slugs has proved effective in organic farming. Nematodes are roundworms and account for 80% of multicellular animal life on Earth. There are 20,000 different species, and the phasmarhabditis or ph-nematodes are natural parasites of burrowing slugs (not slugs that live on the surface). The ph-nematode penetrates the body of the slug and eats it from the inside.

Nematodes must be applied to wet ground so they can burrow into the soil and find their prey. The ground must be watered regularly for the nematodes to flourish. You should see a decline in the slug population between 3 and 8 weeks. Nematodes don’t live long and are highly sensitive to heat, cold and UV radiation, so you will need to repeat the process at regular intervals. This can prove expensive, particular when used on larger plots.

Sacrificial beds

Planting a sacrificial bed is a good way of controlling slugs. Plant things that slugs like to eat and you don’t want because it preserves the plants or vegetables you are growing. Slugs are naturally lazy and will always go for the easy option. Plants like yellow mustard and cress planted between vegetables will act as magnets for the slugs.

Make Friends with Natural Predators

Attract natural predators to your garden by planting flowers and plants they like. Beetles, hedgehogs, toads, songbirds, and moles are natural predators of slugs.

Slug Barriers

Slug barriers block the entrances slugs use to get to your plants. Metal barriers made from copper work best, but you can get plastic ones. Slug collars to put around the base of your plants are also effective.

If slugs can hide in your beds, they will. Removing any material that enables this, such as flower pots and wooden slats, helps prevent this. If you can, try to avoid using loam soil because it is usually pitted with holes and crevices in which the slugs can hide.

Know Your Slugs

Some slugs are beneficial to your garden. The leopard slug, so called because of its black and white markings, is a natural predator of the Spanish slug. Encourage them to settle in your garden; they aren’t a threat to your plants.

Last year the government announced that slug pellets containing metaldehyde are to be banned, so from June this year they will no longer be on sale. DEFRA said that “metaldehyde poses an unacceptable risk to birds and mammals” and it is believed to be one of the reasons for a decline in hedgehog, amphibian and bird numbers. Being water soluble, metaldehyde was also finding its way into rivers and waterways. Song birds i.e. thrushes, hedgehogs, frogs, toads and some insects i.e. ground beetles love to feed on slugs and their eggs. These predators have a significant impact on the slug population, but many of the chemicals used in slug pellets can be toxic to these predators, so if you use them, you run the risk of harming them. There are also increasing concerns about the effects of these chemicals on pets. Unlike Nemaslug®, many slug pellets do NOT work well during wet weather – exactly when you need protection against slugs. Nemaslug® also kills slugs BOTH above and below ground.Nemaslug® contains millions of microscopic beneficial nematodes (Phasmarhabditis Hermaphrodita) that occur naturally in your soil. They are invisible to the naked eye and come as a powder, which is mixed with water and applied to the soil where they search out and invade the slugs. As the nematodes invade the slug, it will stop feeding and will burrow underground to die. As it decomposes in the soil, the nematodes are released back into the soil to search out more slugs and the whole process starts again. Nemaslug® works at temperatures above 5c/40f, so apply UNDERGLASS all year round or apply OUTDOORS during the growing season i.e. between March and October. Copper Tapes, Rings, Bands and Mats – Slugs hate copper because of a reaction between their mucus and the copper. Use self-adhesive copper tapes on your pots / containers to form a barrier that slugs will not cross. Copper |rings and Bands can be used to protect plants in borders from slugs and snails, while matting impregnated with copper will repel slugs and snails plus suppress weeds – this matting is ideal for protecting fruit and veg crops i.e. plant strawberries through the matting.

Wool Pellets and Matting – Sheep’s wool is 100% natural and very effective at repelling slugs and snails as well as being a very effective mulch. Available as pellets or as matting, simply cover the surface to form a barrier that plants can grow through but that slugs and snails will not croos PLUS it acts as mulch to reduce water loss and stop weeds. The Wool Pellets are spread over the surface and watered, they expand and form a mat, which will not blow or wash away. The fibres in the woollen pellets stop the slugs and snails by making it uncomfortable for the slug or snail to crawl across. Wool matting is also available. Barriers and Traps – We have a range of traps and barriers that can be used to create physical barriers to stop slugs and snails getting to the plants. Once of best-sellers is the Slug Collar – Slug Collars are designed to slip over the tender shoots of hostas, delphiniums and other herbaceous plants in borders to protect them from BOTH slug and snails. They are also great in the vegetable garden to protect lettuce, rocket, runner beans etc. Simply push the ring a few cms into the soil and the angled lip effectively keeps slugs and snails away from your plants. During trials in my garden I also found they protected plants from over enthusiastic hoeing and mulching as well!

Fit a Hothouse Cover to your Slug Collar to turn it into a mini hothouse. These covers allow sunlight in and then holds back the warmth, making it ideal for protecting and encouraging growth in spring and autumn. Once the plants are established simply remove the lid during the hot summer months, leave the halo in place to protect from slugs and snails.
