Bats have lost many roosts in recent years, so positioning a Bat Shelter will provide a roost for a variety of species of bats such as Pippistrelle, Noctule, Leisler's, Natterer's, Daubentons and Brown Long-eared bats to roost in, raise their pups in and sleep in during the day. Bats eat flying insects which love to "bug" us, so encouraging bats into your garden is a great way of controlling mosquitoes, etc. This single chamber Bat Shelter is made from untreated, durable cedar, which will last for years and provide excellent insulation.
This single chamber Bat Shelter provides a safe place for bats to roost and is suitable for positioning in woodland, on houses, outbuildings etc. Bats are very sensitive to smell and will be deterred by timber treatments, so this box is made out of untreated wood. The Bat Shelter is accessed by the bats through one of two narrow entrance slots either on the front or at the base. It is illegal for the public to disturb a roost bats, so monitor your bat shelter without disturbance by looking for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box and observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt. You should position the bat shelter under the eaves of your house or on a tree. It should be 2.5m to 5m up, sheltered from strong winds and exposed to the sun for part of the day - facing south-west or south-east is ideal. Make sure there is a clear flight line in. Dimensions H 38cm x W 36cm x D 8.5cm.
Why buy more than one Bat Shelter? It has been shown that you're more likely get bats using your shelters if you have several boxes near near each other.
