Vine Weevil is
a major pest of plants in containers and in gardens where it can
have devastating effects often causing the death of plants. Control
vine weevil grubs naturally by applying Nemasys®. Nemasys®
contains naturally occurring nematodes which are effective at
controlling vine weevil grubs and unlike chemical controls, are
safe for children, pets, birds and wildlife. Nemasys®
is supplied as a powder, which is mixed with water and watered onto
the soil. Nemasys®
works at temperatures above 5°C/40°F and should be applied :-

Adult vine weevil feed
on the plant foliage during the summer and autumn taking
"U" shaped notches from the edge of the leaf (pictured left).
The adults are about 1cm long, brownish black in colour with drab
yellow spots on its back (pictured
right). It is also nocturnal and unable to fly, but being quick
moving if disturbed it is difficult to spot. It is particularly fond
of rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas as well as a range of
herbaceous plants. It only attacks the edge of the leaf and although
the damage is unsightly it will not cause serious harm to the plant
unless there are very large numbers of adults present.
|
 |
|
Vine weevil grubs
are the real problem, attacking the root system of plants from late
summer until the following spring. The larvae over-winter in the root
system attacking the roots until they emerge as adults in late spring
/ summer. The adults will lay eggs in the rootballs of plants, which
will hatch and feed before over-wintering and repeating the whole
process again. |
|
 |
Vine weevil larvae
grow to be about 1cm in length, are creamy white in colour with a
dark head & are
crescent shaped. Affected plants will initially wilt even though the
soil / compost is moist and as more of the root system is destroyed
the plant will eventually topple over. Plants grown in well drained
soil and in peat based composts in containers are more likely to
suffer than plants grown in heavy soil or John Innes compost. |

"Hi Jon, I just wanted to thank you for
saving my garden! Vine weevils nearly wiped out my garden two years
ago. The restocking was not only expensive but there are many plants
I still haven't
been able to replace. After the restock I found vine weevil grubs in
the soil again. Fortunately I found your website and started using
the Nemasys.
I'm
pleased to say not a single plant has died since! I cant thank you
enough, I'm really attached to all my plants and still feel sad when
I think of some of my favourites that died! You have made me a very
happy gardener! Thanks again." Caroline |

Controlling vine weevil
naturally by applying Nemasys®.
Systemic chemical controls rely on
killing the vine weevil AFTER they have attacked the plant.
Chemical controls MUST not be used on food crops. Unlike
chemical controls, Nemasys®
kills the vine weevil grubs BEFORE they attack the plants and
is so safe you can use on pot plants both in the greenhouse and
conservatory, container plants outside, anywhere in the garden and it's
SAFE for food crops such as strawberries
and herbs! |

Nemasys®
contains the naturally occurring parasitic nematode of vine weevil -
Steinernema Kraussei the safest, most effective and economical
treatment against vine weevil.. Each pack of Nemasys®
contains millions of these microscopic nematodes that kill vine
weevil grubs. Once applied, the nematodes seek out the vine weevil
larvae. On contact they enter the body cavity to release a bacteria,
which turns the inside of the larvae into soup, which the nematode
then feed on. Having destroyed the larvae the nematodes are released
back into the soil to hunt down more larvae. Once a larvae has been
infected it turns brown and papery before disintegrating back into
the soil.
-
Microscopic nematodes control vine weevil and are
safe to you, your children, pets and wildlife.
-
Great value for money. Costs less than 10p to treat a
large pot.
-
Totally safe to use on food
crops such as strawberries.
-
Easy to use- just mix with water and use like
liquid feed.
-
Use freely indoors, in patio pots and anywhere in the garden. |

Soil Thermometer and Barrier Glue
- The nematodes work best at a soil temperature of above 5°c /
40°f - this can be checked with a standard soil thermometer but
as a guide you can treat between March and October. Vine
Weevil cannot fly so protect pots and hanging baskets by applying
barrier glue. |
|
 |
Soil Thermometer -
Check that the temperature is correct for the application of
nematodes with this robust and easy to read soil thermometer. Nemasys® should
be applied when the soil temperature is over 5°C.
-
New design means that the thermometer can easily be
read in situ.
-
The thermometer is also very useful to check compost
temperatures during seed germination and propagation.
-
Over 10 cm long with a 3cm diameter face, makes it
very easy to use.. |
