Green Gardener - the natural way to keep your garden looking good

Controlling Whitefly underglass - Whitefly is a major pest in amatuer & commercial greenhouses. In large numbers whitefly can devastate plants. Commercial growers turned to Encarsia in the 60's and 70's and now most glasshouse crops are protected from whitefly in this way. You too can use Encarsia in YOUR greenhouse / conservatory in exactly the same way as a commercial grower.

Encarsia - Protect your plants by introducing a natural parasite of whitefly called Encarsia Formosa. Introduce them AS SOON as the first whitefly appear and the temperatures are above 10C / 50F. Encarsia are introduced into the greenhouse on small white cards which are simply hung on the infected plants.

Controlling Whitefly - Whitefly is a major pest that can destroy plants in greenhouses and conservatories. Control Whitefly by introducing Encarsia on small white cards, which are hung on the plants AS SOON as the first whitefly appear and the temperatures are above 10C / 50F. Available NOW.

Adult whitefly - These small, white, waxy-winged insects congregate at the top of the plant, but fly off if disturbed. Both the adults and larval stages of the whitefly suck sap from the leaves resulting in stunted growth and damaged leaves. The sap contains excess sugar which is excreted by the whitefly and coats the lower leaves. Mould then develops, which is unsightly and produces poor growth.

Whitefly A Whitefly infestation can be brought into your greenhouse / conservatories by bringing in infected plants, so carefully inspect any new ones or they can come in through open windows / open greenhouse vents in warm weather. They are capable of laying up to 200 eggs in groups on the underside of the leaves, so numbers can build up quickly. Tiny larvae emerge ,which search out suitable feeding sites and lose the ability to move. This immobile "scale" stage is pale green, about 2mm long and lives under the lower leaves only - pictured left. The life cycle consists of adult laying eggs, to larvae, to scale and finally to adult, this whole process can be completed in as little as 3 weeks in the summer. Control Whitefly by introducing Encarsia on small white cards, which are hung on the plants AS SOON as the first whitefly appear and the temperatures are above 10C / 50F.

N.B. Whitefly should not be confused with aphids, which shed their skin leaving them on the leaves. To tell the difference shake the plant, whitefly will fly off whereas aphid skins will remain stuck. If it is aphids, use aphidius for control - CLICK HERE.

Encarsia - Protect your plants by introducing  Encarsia Formosa - a natural parasite of whitefly AS SOON as the first whitefly appear and the temperatures are above 10C / 50F - if you have recently used a chemical spray i.e. within the last 2-3 weeks, please contact us (jon@greengardener.co.uk) to check how soon Encarsia can be introduced?

Encarsia - Encarsia are introduced to the greenhouse as dots on small ,white cards, which are simply hung on the lower leaves of the plants. Encarsia is a tiny insect with clear wings ,which seeks out whitefly scale and deposits an egg inside it. As the beneficial Encarsia develops INSIDE the whitefly scale, the whitefly is destroyed and turns black, before a new Encarsia emerges ready to repeat the cycle. Each Encarsia is capable of laying 300 eggs inside 300 whitefly scales in 30 days. It is safe for you, children, pets and wildlife. Food crops such as tomotoes can be harvested continually, where Encarsia is used.

Encarsia - Each delivery consists of a number of cards (5 or 10), with each card producing approx 60 Encarsia i.e. a delivery of 5 cards produces approx 300 Encarsia. Simply seperate the cards along the perforations and hang them around the greenhouse / conservatory on the lower leaves of the infected plants. Two or four separate deliveries at 7 day intervals allows the Encarsia numbers to build up naturally resulting in better control. Encarsia is available as a half course, full course or as an Economy Pack.

  • A half course is two introductions (5 cards per delivery) at 7 day intervals and is for a small greenhouse where the whitefly have just appeared.
  • A full course is four introductions (5 cards per delivery) at 7 day intervals and is for larger greenhouses or where the whitefly have had time to get established.
  • An Economy Pack is eight introductions (10 cards per delivery) at 7 day intervals and is for large greenhouses where there are large numbers of whitefly already present or where you have had a persistent whitefly problem in the past.

" I have never used your products before as have never had a massive problem with whitefly in the greenhouse before!  However ordered a full course of your parasitic wasps which arrived last week and already seeing a massive difference in the greenhouse.  No longer smothered in clouds of whitefly as I brush against the tomatoes. I will most definitely recommend the produce and use again if I have a problem next year. Its also been fascinating watching the little wasps do their stuff." Kind regards Linda Beal

"Encarsia, miraculous! I've had whitefly in my conservatory for 15yrs. After using your encarsia last year I couldn't believe how the whitefly vanished like magic. I tell all my friends about you." Lady B.

"I had a very bad problem on fuchsias and tomatoes, sprayed with all kinds of nasty chemicals. Used encarsia - not had a problem since. Marvellous! Like a miracle!" A.G. of Norwich.

"Used encarsia on fuchsias, pelargoniums and begonias for the first time last year. I've always had problems but this kept the plants completely free. Marvellous!" Mr H. from Cambridge.

Glue Traps - Hang yellow Glue Traps next to plants in spring to monitor & control any early whitefly. Sticky glue traps should be placed next to the growing point of the plants. For plants such as tomatoes, hang the traps with string from the greenhouse roof ,so they can be raised as the plant grows. As the good Encarsia congregate in the lower leaves, the traps will only catch whitefly, which fly to the tops of the plants. Whitefly are attracted by the bright colour and become stuck to the trap. They should be changed as they become dirty. Available in packs of 10 or 30.

SB Invigorator - Use SB Invigorator spray to control whitefly until the temp. is 10C/50F and Encarsia can be introduced. SB Invigorator can then be used to mop up any whitefly "hotspots" i.e. big clusters of whitefly which appear while the Encarsia get established. You should also use it for a pest emergency - been away or not noticed a rapid build up of whitefly - use SB Invigorator to get control BEFORE introducing beneficial insects.

SB Invigorator - Controls whitefly and used regularly will reduce fungal diseases such as mildew PLUS it contains a foliar feed to help plants recover from pest attack. SB Invigorator is not only highly effective, but it is also biodegradable and non -toxic ,which means it can be used in the garden, conservatory or in the greenhouse and on edible plants too - pick and eat straightway. It is suitable for use throughout the year. SB Invigorator is brilliant at clearing heavy infestations BEFORE introducing a natural control - see our Emergency Pest Pack below.

SB Invigorator is available as a 500ml ready to use spray, as a 250ml concentrate (makes 25 litres of spray) or as a 1 litre super concentrate (makes 500 litres) for use in your own sprayer.

"The plant invigorator spray is working beautifully on the aphids in the back garden and it is a pleasure to be able to spray something effective ,but based only on plant oils." Jacob by email.

SB Plant Invigorator - This 'three in one' natural spray controls a range of pests in a safe and effective way and also controls fungal diseases plus it contains a foliar feed. SB Plant Invigorator is not only highly effective, but it is also biodegradable and non toxic which means it can be used in the garden, conservatory or in the greenhouse and on edible plants too - pick and eat straightway. It is suitable for use throughout the year. SB Plant Invigorator is available as a 500ml ready to use spray and as a 250ml concentrate (makes 25 litres of spray).

Garlic Greenhouse Candles - Fumigating a greenhouse with a sulphur candle has been the traditional way of clearing over-wintering pests. Replace these sulphur based candles with a Garlic Greenhouse Candle - a unique chemical-free garlic candle.  It is used in the same way as a sulphur candle i.e. simply place this in your greenhouse, light the fuse and leave overnight. HOWEVER, unlike sulphur candles you do NOT need to remove the plants before using the Garlic Candle and they are safe to use in aluminium greenhouses and polytunnels. Garlic Greenhouse Candles do not leave any smell or visible deposits in the greenhouse and they will not taint any fruit and / or vegetables. Each Garlic Greenhouse Candle is sufficient to treat a 3m x 2m greenhouse.

Citrox disinfectant - This natural disinfectant contains extracts of citrus fruit and is effective against a range of bacterial and fungal diseases. Citrox is ideal for cleaning greenhouses, water butts, bird tables and pots and trays. Citrox is ideal for keeping bird tables clean to minimise the spread of diseases. It can also be added to waterbutts (25ml per 100 litres of water) to keep the water clean and free from disease.

Sulphur Rose - For blemish free roses (and other plants) the natural way apply Sulphur Rose - Roses often develop yellow leaves and black blotches i.e Blackspot & Mildew, which make the plants unsightly. Sulphur Rose is a brilliant spray on plant tonic which encourages healthy blemish-free growth. Spray the stems and the ground around the roses during the dormant season, then spray regularly through the growing season. During periods of high humidity and above average temperatures, apply every 14 days because these conditions encourage the spread of diseases. Sulphur Rose MUST be applied to both the underside and top of all the leaves. Sulphur Rose - a 250g pack keeps 20 roses healthy for one season.

Winter Tree Wash - One of the best ways of reducing pest numbers in fruit trees is to apply this organic Winter Tree Wash during the dormant season i.e. before the leaves appear on the tree. This winter wash is based on natural plant oils which "dissolves" the eggs of pests such as greenfly, red spider mite etc. Apply to top and soft fruit at any time through the winter when the plants are dormant. Suitable for organic growers everywhere. Dilute the product 1 part concentrate to 10 parts water i.e. each bottle of conc. will yield 5 litres of spray.

Clearway Algae and Mould Cleaner - A non chemical treatment for algae and mould that really works. Clearway removes algal growth and mould and once clean will protect surfaces from further growth for at least 6 months. Use on existing patios, decking, driveways, garden furniture etc., but because of its protective action we recommend you also apply it to new structures, so they never get dirty in the first place! Keep your new decking looking like new by treating it BEFORE it gets dirty! Clearway contains no bleach or acids so is harmless to you, your pets and your plants- so if some runs off your patio onto the border it will not harm the plants. Clearway Concentrate - 500ml for use in your own sprayer treats 45 sqm.
