Mealy Bug Control -
Mealy Bug is a major pest in conservatories and greenhouses and with more and more ornamental plants being grown in permanent plantings, this allows the pest to flourish and overwinter.
Control Mealy Bug by introducing Cryptolaemus Larvae and / or Mealy Bug Parasites.

Mealy Bug Control - Female Mealy Bugs are soft bodied, pink / grey in colour and about 5mm long. They are covered with white waxy threads and a waxy covering. Mealy Bugs feed by sucking the sap from the plant and can be found on the stems, leaf joints and leaves - causing them to yellow. The insect extracts large amounts of sap with the excess sap being excreted as honeydew causing a sticky deposit on the lower leaves. In time, sooty mould grows on the honeydew resulting in an unpleasant mess -

Mealy Bug Control - Another sure sign of a mealy bug infestation is "white wool" developing on the plant leaves and stems. This is where the eggs are laid. The female is flightless, only the young nymphs are active and search out new feeding sites by crawling from plant to plant. As the nymphs mature they become less active and settle down to feed. The life cycle can take up to 13 weeks at 18°C/66°F. As the adults are flightless the pest must initially be brought in on infected plants and once it established it is very difficult to eradicate.
Controlling Mealy Bug - Control Mealy Bug by introducing Cryptolaemus Larvae and / or our Mealy Bug Parasites :-
- Cryptolaemus Larvae - For smaller plants in cooler greenhouses and conservatories (temp. 16C +), introduce Cryptolaemus. Available NOW.
- Mealy Bug Parasites - For heavy infestations and infestations on larger plants at higher temps (18C +) introduce Mealy bug parasites. Available later in the year when the temperatures are higher.

Cryptolaemus Larvae - Control mealy bug in your greenhouse or conservatory by introducing cryptolaemus larvae AS SOON as you see mealy bug and the temp is 16C/61F. Place the Cryptolaemus larvae directly onto the infected plants near the mealy bugs - these larvae are easy to handle. The larvae (which look very similar to Mealy Bug) feed on the mealy bug before turning into the adult Cryptolaemus ladybirds (pictured right). The female cryptolaemus then lays her eggs next to the Mealy bug eggs in the "white wool" egg pouches and the whole process is repeated. All stages of the Cryptolaemus eat Mealy Bugs and their eggs. Unlike the Mealy Bug the Cryptolaemus can fly and in very efficient in searching out the Mealy bugs. Cryptolaemus requires both heat and light, so introduce them when the temperature is 16°C/61°F and use artificial light if it is early in the season. If mealybug is present and the temperature is below 16c, control the mealy bug with SB Invigorator until the temperatures are high enough.
Cryptolaemus is available as a half course, full course or economy pack :-
- A half course of one introduction of 10 - for a small greenhouse / conservatory where Mealy Bug have just appeared.
- A full course of 2 introductions of 10 at 14 day intervals - for larger greenhouses / conservatory or where Mealy Bug have had time to get established. Separate deliveries at 14 day intervals allows Cryptolaemus numbers to build up naturally.
- An Economy pack of one intro of 25 - for larger conservatories / greenhouses or large numbers of Mealy Bugs.
"Some very lively and large cryptos arrived about 3 weeks ago and the vine seems fine now - i.e. there is not the sticky goo being dropped everywhere & the wasps have lost interest. Many thanks for your advice." Chris Waddell
"Cryptolaemus got rid of mealy bug on all my plants - I had tried and failed with everything else." Mrs B. from Birmingham
Mealy Bug Parasites - Use this mixture of Mealy Bug Parasites to control heavy infestations of mealy bug and infestations on larger plants AS LONG as the temperature is 18c. This mixture of 3 different predators is very effective at controlling heavy infestations and because they can fly, they are brilliant at controlling mealy bug in larger plants. N.B. They are ideal for controlling mealy bug in permanent plantings in large buildings. Available later in the year when the temperatures are higher.

Mealy Bug Parasites - Each bottle of predators contains 3 different tiny parasites of mealy bug -2 species of Leptomaitix and one of Anagyrus. They all work in the same way. Simply release them into the greenhouse / concervatory from the small bottle and the tiny midges will fly off into the plants and start to lay eggs inside the mealy bug larvae. After a few days the mealy bug will turn brown and die and a parasite will emerge from it’s body to carry on destroying mealy bug. Don’t worry, the parasites are harmless to you, your children, pets and other wildlife and are so small that once released you will not notice them working away
Mealy Bug Parasites - Supplied in a bottle containing a mixture of 50 parasites suitable for a medium to large greenhouse.
"I have had mealybug for years and after your advice, decided to try these new parasites and they are brilliant - if the mealybug re-appears I will be using them again. Thankyou" Shirley by email.
SB Invigorator - Use SB Invigorator spray to control mealy bug until the temp. is 16C/61F and then Cryptolaemus Larvae can be introduced. SB Invigorator can then be used to mop up any mealybug "hotspots" i.e. big clusters of mealy bug once the Crypto have been introduced. You should also use it for a pest emergency - been away or not noticed an explosion of mealy bug - use SB Invigorator to get control BEFORE introducing beneficial insects.
SB Invigorator - Controls mealybug and used regularly will reduce fungal diseases such as mildew PLUS it contains a foliar feed to help plants recover from pest attack. SB Invigorator is not only highly effective, but it is also biodegradable and non -toxic ,which means it can be used in the garden, conservatory or in the greenhouse and on edible plants too - pick and eat straightway. It is suitable for use throughout the year.

SB Invigorator is brilliant at clearing heavy infestations of mealy bug BEFORE introducing a cryptolaemus. Here the spray has been applied twice at 2 day intervals to kill a heavy infestation of mealy bug before introducing cryptolaemus. The first spray removes the protective wax from the pest, which normally makes it so difficult to control and then the subsequent spray 2 days later kills the pest. As no harmful chemical residues are left behind, the cryptolameus were immediately introduced to give on-going pest control.
SB Invigorator is available as a 500ml ready to use spray, as a 250ml concentrate (makes 25 litres of spray) or as a 1 litre super concentrate (makes 500 litres) for use in your own sprayer.
"The plant invigorator spray is working beautifully on the aphids in the back garden and it is a pleasure to be able to spray something effective ,but based only on plant oils." Jacob by email.
