Green Gardener - the natural way to keep your garden looking good
Red Spider Mite (RSM) and Citrus Mite are major pests under glass. These pests are a particular problem in conservatories where the combination of high temperatures and low humidity in the summer are ideal for their development. Their lifecycle will become modified to last all year long in an artificial environment i.e. a heated conservatory. To control Red Spider Mite :-

  • Use our new Red Spider Mite Wax Traps to trap / monitor adult red spider mites.
  • Use Amblyseius andersonii during the autumn and spring when the temp is below 16c (but above 10c).
  • Introduce Phytoseilus AS SOON as you see RSM and the temp is between 16C/61F & 30C/86F.
  • Introduce Amblyseius andersonii to control Citrus Mite all year round.

"Had a red spider problem- tried all kinds of chemical sprays- no effect. Used phyto.- haven't seen any since" Mr J. from Norwich.

Amblyseius andersonii for controlling Citrus Mite Use Ambleyseius Andersonii to control Citrus Mite all year round. Citrus Spider Mite is a big problem attacking all types of citrus i.e. oranges, lemons etc. Amblyseius andersonii is very effective against this type of spider mite and should be used all year round (only needs a temperature of 10c) to control it.

Amblyseius andersonii for controlling Citrus Mite - There are a number of different red spider mite species and Citrus Spider Mite has become a big problem attacking all types of citrus (orange, lemon etc). To control Citrus Spider Mite, use Amblyseius andersonii introduced at 4 weekly intervals. Amblyseius andersonii is supplied in sachets with each sachet containing a colony of Amblyseius and a supply of food which will last them for up to 6-8 weeks. During this time the adult Amblyseius will emerge and search for RSM on your plants to eat. Red Spider Mite (RSM) - Adult RSM are just visible to the naked eye and can be found on the underside of leaves although the yellowing of leaves and webbing are normally spotted 1st. Control RSM by introducing Phytoseiulus AS SOON as you see RSM and the temp is 16C/61F (& below 30c/86f). Phytoseiulus is a tiny, harmless mite with a BIG appetite for Red Spider Mite. Available NOW.

Red Spider Mite (RSM) - Despite their name they can be any colour from red, yellow, green, orange, brown or even black depending on the host plant, although they are normally red and all have 2 dark spots on the rear of the body. The females over winter in cracks and crevices in greenhouses or conservatories and emerge to lay eggs in the spring when the temperatures rise and the daylength increases. The eggs hatch to produce larvae and as the temperatures rise the infestation can quickly escalate and get out of control. All the stages in the RSM cycle feed on the underside of leaves. RSM feed on plant tissue piercing the cells and sucking out it's contents killing it. This occurs mostly on the underside of the leaves resulting in small yellow / white spots to appear on the upper leaf surface. As the attack continues the death of more and more cells causes the leaf to turn yellow and die. Eventually the whole plant is killed. As the number of RSM increases, webs are produced across the shoot tips. RSM can be brought into the greenhouse or conservatory either on plants, on the clothing of people or through vents in warm weather.

Controlling Red Spider Mite - Control red spider mite in your greenhouse or conservatory by introducing Phytoseiulus AS SOON as you see RSM and the temp is 16C/61F.

Controlling Red Spider Mite - Phytoseiulus has been used commercially since the 1960's. Phytoseiulus is a tiny mite, slightly smaller than a RSM and it feeds on all stages of the RSM eating up to 5 adults or 25 young larvae/eggs per day. Phytoseiulus is supplied in small tubes containing a minimum of 1000 adults. The contents of the tube (inc. the vermiculite they are packed in) is simply sprinkled over the infected plants. If the infestation of RSM is very heavy and there is webbing at the tips of the plants, break up the webs first with your fingers or with a feather duster and spray the plant with SB Invigorator, concentrating on the underside of the leaves. Help the Phytoseiulus by increasing the humidity (spray the underside of the leaves with soft water) and keep the temperature above 16C (but below 30°C). Also group infected plants together, so the Phyto can "chase" the RSM from plant to plant. N.B. If you have recently used a chemical spray i.e. within the last 2-3 weeks, please contact us (jon@greengardener.co.uk) to check how soon Phytoseiulus can be introduced?

  • Only got a few plants or a very mild RSM infestation? Use 1 intro. of 1000 phyto.
  • Persistent infestation? Use regular introductions throughout the growing season by ordering a planned programmes.
  • Heavy infestation or you have lots of plants? Use an economy pack of 2000 phyto and if the infestation is very heavy, spray with SB Invigorator 1st.

"I just thought i would let you know that i used your predator mites on my Datura cuttings and they have totally wiped out the red spider mites where Ibefethrin didn't work. I won't use insecticides any more, predator mites are brilliant" Paul

"hi jonathan, just want to say a big thankyou for your help and that the critters (red spider mite) are well and truly dealt with thanks to your help. Your customer service was excellent and will definitely be recommending your services to others." John by email

Phytoseiulus Planned Programmes - Introduce Phytoseiulus regularly (every 4 weeks) where RSM is a recurring problem, especially where plants are being moved to and from the greenhouse and new plants are being brought in. This is common in a busy greenhouse during the growing season and makes RSM particularly difficult to control i.e. you may be taking the bio control out and bring RSM in. In commercial greenhouses they combat this problem by introducing phyto regularly through the season - you too can now have regular introductions. Our Phytoseiulus Planned Programme consist of phyto sent by 1st class post at 4 weekly intervals. 1st decide if you want 1000 or 2000 phyto per delivery and then decide how many weeks you want your programme to run for - we offer a 3, 4 & 5 introductions. The 1st Phytoseiulus will be despatched ASAP and then we will continue to send fresh Phytoseiulus every 4 weeks for the duration of the programme.

" I had 2 peaches and nectarines that were practically dying from RSM. I used Phyto. and now they are fruiting marvelously." Mr J of Reading

"Jon, I just wanted to make a point of thanking your company for your excellent quality of service. I recently needed to purchased some Phytoseiulus for a growing issue of Red Spider Mite. Although it had not been a major problem, we had been bothered by RSM for the past 5-6 years,  but this summer we had been infested with them from early April. After applying the initial bottle of Phytoseiulus, we were pleasantly surprised by the results, but the 2nd application has totally eradicated the problem. Great product, great service and grateful thanks." Bob by email

SB Invigorator - Use SB Invigorator spray to control RSM until the temp. is 16C/61F and Phytoseiulus can be introduced. SB Invigorator can then be used to mop up any RSM "hotspots" i.e. any big groups of RSM discovered once the Phyto have been introduced. You should also use it for a pest emergency - been away or not noticed a rapid build up of RSM - use SB Invigorator to get control BEFORE introducing beneficial insects.

SB Invigorator - Controls Red Spider Mite and used regularly will reduce fungal diseases such as mildew PLUS it contains a foliar feed to help plants recover from pest attack. SB Invigorator is not only highly effective, but it is also biodegradable and non -toxic ,which means it can be used in the garden, conservatory or in the greenhouse and on edible plants too - pick and eat straightway. It is suitable for use throughout the year. SB Invigorator is brilliant at clearing heavy infestations BEFORE introducing a natural control - see our Emergency Pest Pack below.

SB Invigorator is available as a 500ml ready to use spray, as a 250ml concentrate (makes 25 litres of spray) or as a 1 litre super concentrate (makes 500 litres) for use in your own sprayer.

"The plant invigorator spray is working beautifully on the aphids in the back garden and it is a pleasure to be able to spray something effective ,but based only on plant oils." Jacob by email.

Amblyseius andersonii for LOW/HIGH temperature RSM control Use Amblyseius andersonii to control Red Spider Mite when it is either not warm enough to introduce Phytoseiulus (below 16c) or during the growing season when the temperatures regularly reach in excess of 30c/86f. Amblyseius andersonii is a low/high temperture predator, which only needs a temperature of 10c to become active and is much more tolerant of higher temperatures i.e. above 30c. Available NOW.

Controlling Red Spider Mite - Red Spider Mites (RSM) overwinter in the cracks and crevices in your greenhouse or conservatory coming to life in the spring as temperatures rise, so be prepared and hang sachets of Amblyseius andersonii to lie in wait for any RSM that have over-wintered BEFORE they appear. It should also be used during hot summers where temperatures are too hot for traditional RSM controls such as Phytoseiulus.

Amblyseius andersonii for LOW/HIGH temperature RSM control - Often RSM can flourish in your greenhouse / conservatory BEFORE the temperatures are high enough to introduce phytoseiulus, Amblyseius andersonii is a low temperture predator, which can be introduced when temps reach 10c. Amblyseius andersonii also works in temperatures in excess of 30c, so if temperatures are regularly reaching this, Amblyseius andersonii should be introduced INSTEAD of Phytoseiulus. Amblyseius andersonii   is supplied in sachets with each sachet containing a colony of Amblyseius and a supply of food which will last them for up to 6-8 weeks. During this time the adult Amblyseius will emerge and search for RSM on your plants to eat. If there are none they will search out other sources of food such as pollen, fungal spores and plant sap and wait for the red spider mite to arrive. Introduce early in the season as soon as temperatures average 10C/50F and new growth appears on plants or introduce during hot summers when temperatures regularly exceed 30c/86f.

Amblyseius andersonii - 20 sachets is enough to treat the average greenhouse (10 x 6)

"This is just a short note to advise that I have found these predators to be extremely efficient at controlling red spider mite on my phoenix roebellini  palm in my conservatory. I am very pleased with the result." Regards, Paul Etchells

New - Red Band Spider Mite Traps™ - These Red Band Spider Mite Traps™ are the simple and effective way of trapping / monitoring adult red spider mites. It works on the very simple basis that red spider mites always climb upwards searching for food and this trap uses this behaviour to lure the mites onto a very sticky waxed pad suspended above the plant with a string trailing down into the top of the plant. They are ideal for :-

  1. Control red spider mite throughout the year i.e. including early / late in the season when temperatures are not warm enough for a natural predator such as Phytoseiulus or Amblyseius andersonii
  2. For monitoring crops i.e. leave the traps in place and once adults are spotted, natural predators can be introduced.
  3. Long term protection - leave these traps in place to give on-going control and only need to be replaced when full. N.B. Can even be used when natural predators are already in place.

New - Red Band Spider Mite Traps™ - Simply suspend the very sticky waxed pad 30cm / 12" above the plant with the string trailing down into the top of the plant and as the mites move to the top of the plant, they continue climbing up the string dangling from the trap and onto the sticky wax pad from which there is no escape! The sticky pads only need to be replaced when they are covered in red spider mites, so it is a very simple and cost effective method that works! Be careful the trap is very sticky, so suspend it in the right position before removing the protective backing and keep it away from heaters and lights. Ideal for tomatoes,  cucumbers,  oranges,  lemons and plants in hydroponic systems. Available in packs of 5 - use one trap per infected plant.

N.B. Once conditions are favourable, Phytoseiulus or Amblyseius Andersonii can be introduced to give on-going control.
