Bokashi Bins use a mixture of bacteria, fungi and yeasts to safely compost your kitchen food scraps including meat, fish, fruit and vegetable waste. These small composters (19 litres) are supplied in pairs and will easily handle the kitchen waste from a large family. It is so efficient that even meat and fish scraps can be composted indoors. The Bokashi system consists of 2 parts :-
The Bokashi Bin - The bin is made from 85% recycled plastic and measures only 480mm (height) x 320mm (width) x 250mm (depth), so it will easily fit in most kitchens / utility room. The bucket comes with an airtight lid and has a sump and tap built into the base to allow excess liquid to be drained off. Each PAIR of Bokashi Bins comes complete with airtight lids, handles, drip trays, a plunger for pressing down the food, 1kg of Bokashi Bran (see below) and a scoop.
The Bokashi Bran - The bran is sprinkled over the kitchen waste and contains the bacteria, fungi and yeasts necessary to start the composting process. The Bokashi Bran is available in 1kg, 3kg and 5kg bags. 1kg of Bokashi Bran will keep you composting for approx 2 months. Bokashi Bran will keep for 6 months, so why not stock up - 3kg will last you 6 months and saves £9.98. N.B. Order 5kg of bran if you composting lots of kitchen waste or if you are using more than one pair of bins at a time - 5kg of bran for £29.99 SAVING £19.96.

Bokashi Bins - Developed in Japan, Bokashi Bins are a unique and efficient way of composting kitchen waste. As landfill sites fill up, roadside collections cut to once a fortnight & councils even talk about charging by weight to take bags away, composting your own kitchen waste makes sense. On a daily basis, simply add your kitchen waste (including vegetable and fruit waste, meat and fish scraps, coffee grounds etc) to the Bokashi Bin and sprinkle a little bran over the top. Easy! The bacteria, yeasts and fungi in the bran then get to work composting the waste. Keep adding kitchen waste and bran, pressing it down as you go until the bin is full. Every 2-3 days, drain the liquid off from the bottom of the bin - this can be diluted (1:100) and used to feed plants or poured down drains to clear pipes and stop nasty odours.
Bokashi Bins are sold in pairs - once a bin is full, leave it for 2 weeks to ferment ,but drain off liquid and start filling the 2nd bin. After 2 weeks, the 1st bin will be fully composted. The Bokashi contents won't look like traditional compost - more like it has been pickled and will have a sweet and sour cidery smell. The 2 bins are then alternated with one bin taking the fresh waste while the other is fermenting. After 2 weeks, empty out the full bin ,which can be either be composted further by adding it to a compost heap, wormery or dig it into the garden ,where the nutrients will be released back into the soil. Bokashi Compost gives plants a good boost, both in the garden (for bumper crops and blooms) and patio pots.It has been added to one of the pots of bulbs pictured left . See how the foliage is noticeably bigger.
