"I’ve just received a delivery of the coir pots which are an excellent product at a very reasonable price. Several of the ladies at work who grown on their own plants have expressed an interest so hopefully you’ll be getting more orders. Finally, we had a very cold night over the weekend and I was pleased to see my first ladybirds using the ladybird house I had just put out in the garden. I will be investing in some other wildlife shelters before the winter. I hope you’ve got the message your products are brilliant and I wish more people would consider this way of gardening than pulverising everything with chemicals. Keep up the good work. Terry Lane"

"Thanks for the advice - I will definitely be buying the coir again - I've had a lot more success with seeds this year using it rather than a soil based compost.  It doesn't dry out quickly, and the feeding regime means you get really healthy young plants ready for the rigors of the allotment!" Kind regards Gemma

Coir Pellets - These compressed coir pellets are ideal for sowing seeds or for rooting cuttings. Add water to them and watch them swell to make the ideal growing medium (3.6cm in diameter). It is always best to sow seeds into individual pellets, so you don’t have to handle young delicate seedlings as it is so easy to damage them. Once large enough, pot up or plant out the plant and the pellet. For small seeds such as begonia and lobelia sow a tiny pinch of seeds into a coir pellet. For larger seeds such as tomato simply drop 1 or 2 seeds into the a coir pellet. I prefer to cover these larger seeds with a sprinkling of vermiculite. For cuttings of tender perennials such as fuchsias, geraniums, verbena etc. (many of the plants used in baskets and tubs through the summer will provide cuttings), push the cuttings into the coir pellets and place in a propagator or simply cover with a plastic bag and keep on a warm windowsill. They should root in 2-3 weeks.

Plant Fibre Pots and Trays - These new environmentally friendly pots and trays are made from 100% natural plant fibre’s and are a great alternative to plastic pots / trays.

Plant Fibre Pots and Trays - These Plant Fibre Pots and Trays start off just like plastic pots / trays and are robust enough to raise plants in and will not fall apart when watered. As the plants grow, the roots grow through the sides ready for potting on or planting out – no root disturbance and no plastic pots for you to throw away. Once planted out the pots / trays decompose completely without leaving any remains behind – its quick and easy and good for the plants and the environment. They are available as 10cm pots or 5 x 4 trays (20 cells per tray).

Plant Fibre Pots - These pots are 10.5cm in diameter and are ideal for sowing seeds directly into or for potting on plants started off in our coir pellets - look out for the Pot and Pellet Special Offer. They are also ideal for rooting cuttings in. When the plants are big enough, just pop the plant and pot into its planting hole and the pot will biodegrade.

Plant Fibre Trays - These 5 x 4 trays feature 20 individual cells, which are ideal for sowing seeds directly into, for rooting cuttings and for raising small plants ready for potting on or planting out. Each tray measures 30cm x 24 cm and each cell measures 6 x 6 cm. The roots grow freely through the side walls, so when the plant is big enough, simply separate the cells and then plant the cell and plant into a larger pot (the Plant Fibre Pots are ideal), a hanging basket or into the garden.

Soil Block Maker - Instead of buying plastic seed trays and pots, use this handy soil blocker to make your own soil blocks in which you can raise your young plants. This soil blocker maker transforms compost into 5cm blocks of compressed compost, which hold their shape without a container. They are ideal for seed sowing and pricking out young seedlings. Once grown the plants PLUS the blocks can be transplanted directly into your garden / container. Better for you- no pots to clear up and better for the plant-no root disturbance.

Soil Block Maker - This blocker is made of robust zinc-plated steel, which will last for years and is very easy to use. As well as reducing the need for plastic pots (which is good for the environment and reduces the clutter in your shed!), soil blocks also help seeds germinate. Sow seeds into the top of each block and once germinated, the roots are free to fill the block. When large enough plants can be planted directly into the garden / container. The key to making soil blocks that hold their shape is to use soggy compost - regular compost from the garden centre works well or specialist blocking compost is available from some suppliers. The soil block maker produces 4 x 5cm blocks at a time. The air space created between each block is enough to keep the roots from growing from one block to another, so they can be easily seperated and once transplanted into the garden / container the plants quickly establish as there is no root damage. To make your soil blocks :-

  1. Wet the compost thoroughly.
  2. Press the soil blocker into compost 2 or 3 times to fill the chambers with compost.
  3. Scrape the end of the blocker to remove any excess compost from the bottom of the blocks.
  4. Depress the plunger to eject the blocks.
  5. The soil blocker leaves a small indentation in the top of each block ready for a seed.
  6. Plant one seed into the top of each block or if sowing very small seed such as lobelia 'pinch' sow a few seeds. For larger seeds cover with vermiculite but leave smaller seeds uncovered.
  7. At the correct temp. (see seed packet for guidance) germination will be rapid as the soil block will provide all the moisture needed (do not water until after germination). Once established, the plants can be planted directly into the garden / container.
  8. Water soil blocks regularly as the plants grow- if they do dry out plunge them into water 20-30 minutes.

Hessian Hanging Flower Bags - These hanging bags are made from hessian, which is biodegradable and much more attractive than the plastic versions and are great for creating colourful all year round displays. Hanging bags are much easier to prepare and look after than hanging baskets as they require much less water and feed. The bag will last at least 2 seasons and much longer if emptied and stored dry when not in use.

Hessian Hanging Flower Bags - They are very easy to plant - In the summer, fill with bizzie lizzies and fuchsias for the shade or petunias, bedding begonias or trailing geraniums for the sun. Plant them up with pansies in the Autumn. Simply fill with a good quality potting compost and insert Water Slices (if using), placing them evenly in the bag as you fill it with compost. Lay the bag flat to plant, increasing the size of the holes to take the roots. Water the bags and leave for 1-2 weeks before hanging the bag up and planting one or two plants in the top.

"Hi Jon, I’ve attached a photo of the begonia illumination I’ve grown in a hessian bag (see left).  The bags work brilliantly and the display has been stunning all summer." Ann by Email

"I just thought I'd send you a photo of my flowers from last year (see right). I was delighted when I saw your hessian bags because it meant I could still have a little bit of garden on my narrowboat. Throughout the summer I had people asking about what I used (fellow narrowboaters and tow path walkers alike) and I duly directed them to 'Green Gardener'. Thanks for a great product." Liz by email

Water slices - As recommended in the Saturday Telegraph - Hanging bags and baskets need alot of water and can easily dry out. Stop this happening by adding a water slice. These slices absorb water as you water and retain it longer than compost alone, so less watering for you! Plant roots will penetrate the slice and take out the water. Soak the disc overnight in water and it will dramatically increase in size! Cut the slice in quarters and place evenly in the bag as you fill it with compost. Plant the hanging bags up as normal and water. N.B. Can also be used to feed hanging baskets, tubs and containers.

"Hello – I bought some of your water slices for my plants, as we were going away for a few days.  We have just returned and they seemed successful and so have ordered two more lots from you." Mrs. M. Terrell
