Green Gardener Composting Options

Composting is the best way to deal with organic waste, as it returns valuable organic matter to the soil in the form of easy to handle compost. Efficient composting is essential especially now that rubbish bins are being empties less (often left for 2 weeks). Home composting can be broken down into 2 main areas :-

  • Kitchen waste i.e. veg peelings, left over cooked food, tea leaves, coffee grinds & stale bread, dust from your vacuum cleaner and packaging waste such as cardboard.

  • Garden waste i.e. lawn clippings, weeds, leaves, hedge trimmings etc.

There is a daunting range of composters, wormeries etc on offer so use this table to help you work out which system is best for you :-

Grass

Tumbler is best!

One of the most difficult materials to compost as it tends to form a sticky slimey mass. Must be mixed with other materials such as leaves or add a bacterial additive (see grass treat below) and keep it aerated - the tumbler is the easiest way to do this.
